The University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center nursing students were recognized for their accomplishments by the Texas Nursing Students’ Association, Dr. Van Patterson, UT Tyler LUC director, announced.
The 2013-14 Community Health Project Award was presented to the local chapter for fostering development and implementation of community service on the local, state or national level; educating health care consumers about illness prevention and early detection of disease and treatment options; and promoting community awareness about changes in community health.
“This is a special honor for the UT Tyler College of Nursing Student Nurses Association and for the Longview University Center,” said Karen Koerber-Timmons, clinical instructor and National Student Nursing Association adviser. “Our SNA chapter is active in community service events, leadership activities, and health policy discussions at the local and state levels. We are proud of what our students have been able to accomplish.”
The LUC students developed and implemented a health fair in November 2013. The “From Small to Tall” health fair was designed to educate and serve members of the community in all age groups.
Level four nursing students, who graduated in December 2013, developed the educational booths on household disaster planning, use of over-the-counter medications, tobacco exposure, hypertension screening, childhood nutrition and infection control and noise pollution awareness.
The 2013-14 UT Tyler Student Nurses Association officers include Longview University Center students, Hillary Hill, 2013 president; Kelly Moore, 2014 president; Laci Fulton, 2013 vice-president; Cheyanne Butler, 2014 vice-president; Katie Chapman, 2013 secretary/treasurer; Rachel Pipak, 2014 secretary/treasurer; and Michael Herrington, 2013-14 webmaster.
