The University of Texas at Tyler Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation will present “The Flipped Classroom” featuring Canadian high school math teacher and education pioneer Graham ‘Math’ Johnson.
The public lecture, divided into two sessions, will be on Thursday, Feb. 27 at UT Tyler. Session 1 will be held 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. in the UT Tyler University Center theater. Session 2 will be held 3 – 5 p.m. in the UT Tyler Robert R. Muntz Library, room 115.
During Session 1, Johnson will discuss the flipped classroom model, which inverts traditional teaching methods and delivers online instruction outside of the classroom and moves homework into the classroom. During Session 2, Johnson will provide hands-on instruction and examples. Space is limited for the second session.
“This free event is not only open to all of our UT Tyler faculty, but also to all teachers and educators. We encourage anyone who is interested to attend,” said Dr. Scott Marzilli, UT Tyler assistant vice president for academic innovation and student success.
Johnson is a pioneer of the flipped classroom model in Canada. He currently serves as a high school math educator at Okanagan Mission Secondary School in Kelowna, British Columbia and as an instructional designer at the Thinkable Institute. Johnson holds a bachelor of science in mathematics from Coppin St. University as well as a bachelor of education in secondary mathematics and a master of arts in educational technology, both from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
He was awarded the 2011 Canadian Education Association’s Ken Spencer Award for excellence in teaching and learning.
