The University of Texas at Tyler Global Awareness Through Education program will present a lecture featuring president of the Winning the Minds Foundation, Francisco Martin-Rayo, Dr. Paul Streufert, special academic programs executive director, announced.
The public talk will be 5:30 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, room 1009.
An expert in counter-radicalization and public diplomacy programs, Martin-Rayo will discuss his travels to Yemen, Pakistan and Kenya and his educational work in those areas.
He has been published in Foreign Policy Magazine, The Guardian Newspaper and Harvard University. His book, “Winning the Minds,” addresses the recruitment of children into terrorist organizations in these regions and how education can be the key deterrent in such recruitment.
The Winning the Minds Foundation gives scholarships to female and male refugees in Pakistan so that they can attend a local university. In return, scholars agree to go back to the refugee camps during the summer and teach.
