Christopher Cox has been named coordinator of The University of Texas at Tyler’s Veterans Resource Center, effective Nov. 1, Ona Tolliver, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, announced.
Cox has worked as an enrollment services officer at the UT Tyler Enrollment Services Center since 2011.
Both a UT Tyler alumnus and veteran himself, he follows Amanda Bayatpoor, who accepted a position as education services coordinator with the Wounded Warrior Project.
“We are delighted to have Chris Cox join our team in student affairs,” Tolliver said. “His experience working with and providing our veterans, dependents and active duty personnel with valuable information regarding the university and their military benefits will be a real asset to the Veterans Resource Center.”
As coordinator, he will oversee all the UT Tyler Veteran Resource Center’s efforts and maintain information for campus veteran-related resources, including local military support services and veteran affairs facilities.
“Having used Hazlewood benefits myself, I know that the process for a new student can seem overwhelming,” Cox said. “I look forward to being able to help new and current students navigate the benefits side of their education and help them make that transition from soldier to student.
“I also look forward to enhancing the leadership hub here at UT Tyler by utilizing and building upon strong community relationships, current and future veteran and dependent populations and the mentorship and guidance of faculty and staff.”
Before coming to UT Tyler, Cox previously served Coldwell Banker United Realtors. From 1992 – 1995, he served the United States Army as an infantryman and from 1995 – 1999 as a Texas National Guard squad leader.
Cox holds a bachelor of science in speech communication from UT Tyler and currently is enrolled in UT Tyler’s master of science in human resource development program.
He also is founder and past president of the UT Tyler Patriot Rise student organization, which is a chapter of Student Veterans of America.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 7,500 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
