The University of Texas at Tyler Meadows Gallery will feature “Tulsa Streets” beginning Monday, Sept. 30, Ray Sikes, gallery coordinator, announced.
The public exhibition continues through Friday, Nov. 8 and features collages and paintings by Mark Lewis, a renowned artist from Oklahoma.
A public opening reception and gallery talk will be 6 – 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the gallery.
“My paintings and collages are about of way of seeing, constructing and experiencing daily life,” Lewis said. “I want to construct – with my materials – the signs, the telephone poles, the storefronts, the high lines, the streets, the cars, the sidewalks and observing the daily routines of the locals all held under the skies that I love in Tulsa, Okla.”
The Meadows Gallery is located in the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by special appointment.
Lewis recently completed a commission piece, “The Tallgrass Prairie,” for the new BOK Arena – designed by Cesar Pelli – in Tulsa. He has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country, including three solo shows in New York City. Lewis held two solo shows of recent collages and paintings at the Bowery Gallery in New York City and at Living Arts of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla.
Born in Oklahoma City, Lewis studied painting at Oklahoma State University. He holds a bachelor of fine arts in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Mo. and a master of fine arts in painting from Yale University. Lewis currently teaches painting and drawing at the University of Tulsa.
