Dr. Paul Streufert has been named executive director of special academic programs at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Alisa White, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, announced.
He is an associate professor within the Department of Literature and Languages and the founding director of the UT Tyler Honors Program.
In this expanded role, effective July 1, Streufert will oversee both the honors and Global Awareness Through Education programs at UT Tyler. Dr. Jill Blondin, current GATE director, has accepted a position at Virginia Commonwealth University as director of the VCU Globe.
“Dr. Streufert is a proven academic leader, and he has the ability and the heart to continue to build these successful programs,” White said. “Honors Program leaders and GATE leaders have a history of working closely together to collaborate on a number of events and initiatives that focus on international issues and cultural awareness.
“Dr. Streufert’s appointment will facilitate continued collaboration and synergies between the two programs,” she added.
Streufert has served UT Tyler since 2001. He was instrumental in establishing the UT Tyler Honors Program in 2009. With the support of department faculty and the Center for Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, he also created the university’s Latin program, which offers a five-course Latin sequence as well as an interdisciplinary minor in classical studies.
His awards include an honorary Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Award for Writing for his translation of Euripides’ “Trojan Women.”
He specializes in classical literature and the use of classical literature in later works. Other research interests include early modern and 20th-century dramatic literature as well as semiotics.
Streufert holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Purdue University.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service.
