Luke B. Goebel, an assistant professor of English at The University of Texas at Tyler, was recognized for his fiction writing, Dr. Hui Wu, Department of Literature and Languages chair, announced.
Goebel won Fiction Collective Two Press’ Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize in the amount of $1,500 for his short story collection manuscript titled, “Fourteen Stories None of Them are Yours.”
The prize is awarded annually by FC2 to an outstanding book-length manuscript of formally innovative fiction. The contest is open to all writers who have not previously published with FC2, and the winner receives a publication deal by FC2, an imprint of the University of Alabama Press.
“I’m deeply honored and thrilled to have won this award,” Goebel said.
Manuscripts are judged on how well they fulfill FC2’s mission to publish fiction considered by America’s largest publishers too challenging, innovative or unorthodox for the commercial setting. Dr. Jeffrey DeShell, a professor at University of Colorado – Boulder, served as this year’s contest judge.
This will be Goebel’s first short story collection to be published.
Serving UT Tyler since 2011, Goebel teaches graduate and undergraduate English courses as well as freshman composition courses. He serves as the UT Tyler Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society adviser.
Goebel also serves as the co-editor of the national literary journal, The New York Tyrant. He previously won the 2012 Joan Scott Memorial Fiction Award, which annually recognizes excellence in fiction.
FC2 is an author-run, non-for-profit publisher of artistically adventurous, non-traditional fiction.
Its mission is to publish books of high quality and exceptional ambition whose style, subject matter or form push the limits of American publishing and reshape American literary culture.
