The Literacy Council of Tyler recognized eight volunteers from The University of Texas at Tyler for their service, Dr. William Geiger, vice provost for academic affairs, announced.
UT Tyler began a partnership with the Literacy Council of Tyler in January 2012. The internship program gives UT Tyler undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work as LCOT interns through the America Reads & Counts Program. Working in community service positions, students provide tutoring and other learning services to LCOT clientele.
“The UT Tyler Internship Program is invaluable to the Literacy Council of Tyler,” said DeAnn Sutton, Literacy Council of Tyler’s coordinator of volunteers. “It is a stunning success and a win-win situation. We greatly appreciate the partnership.”
Fall 2012 interns are listed by hometown.
ATHENS – Traci Willingham.
AUSTIN – Miles Nye.
LITTLE ELM – Kimbria Burton.
PALESTINE – Alexis Poole.
TYLER – Mason Berry, Huma Maqsood and Madiha Maqsood.
VIRGINIA – Megan White.
These students participated in the America Reads & Counts Program, which is supported by federal work-study funds, according to Marquita Hackett, UT Tyler financial aid director.
This semester, the interns allocated more than 9,000 student contact hours, Sutton added.
The Literacy Council of Tyler began in 1990 as an adult basic literacy program and currently offers basic education, GED and English as a Second Language classes. Last year, LCOT provided educational services to more than 2,300 students with a staff of 44 and nearly 400 volunteers. Their services impact undereducated adults, their families and the community at large.
