Abhidnya Ghuge of Tyler, a graduate student at The University of Texas at Tyler, is one of 12 artists featured in an exhibition at the Johnathan Farrara Gallery in New Orleans, Ray Sikes, gallery/media coordinator, announced.
Her artwork titled, “Halls Without Walls, Room To Feel In The Door Awaits, Your Return Within.” (Size: 18' W x 10' H x 8' D), was selected from 500 entries in a national juried competition.
The piece features 7,200 paper plates printed, painted and plugged into wire armature.
“I use a humble disposable medium, a paper plate, and transform it into a precious object by various printmaking processes,” Ghuge said. “I make a wood block from birch wood with my original design and print that design on each paper plate. Then they are put together in a form.”
“It is an experiential piece, in the sense that the viewers are able to walk into the space and be surrounded by the piece. They can see up close all the patterns, forms and get a feel for the piece,” she added.
The show, 16th No Dead Artists National Juried Competition, began Aug. 28 and will close Friday, Sept. 28. Jurors included Eric Shines, Andy Warhol Museum director; Amanda Coulson, Volta Art Gair Basel and New York founder; and Tommy Coleman, New Orleans art collector and philanthropist.
A native of Bombay, India, Ghuge will graduate with a master of fine arts in May 2013.
