Dr. Ross Sherman has been named interim dean of the College of Education and Psychology at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Alisa White, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, announced.
He follows Dr. William Geiger, who has been appointed UT Tyler vice provost.
“Dr. Ross Sherman has a long history of excellent service to UT Tyler. He will be able to lead the College of Education and Psychology effectively and without a big learning curve. I look forward to working with him in his new role,” White said.
Sherman has served UT Tyler as professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies since 1987.
As interim dean, he oversees the university’s education and psychology programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the UT Tyler School of Education, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Department of Psychology and Counseling.
“I look forward to working with the distinguished faculty within the College of Education and Psychology as we continue our mission to provide exemplary educational experiences to our students,” Sherman said.
Before serving UT Tyler, he served the Alief Independent School District in Houston for seven years, first as an elementary teacher and later as principal.
Sherman holds an Ed.D. in educational leadership and cultural studies from the University of Houston.
He also holds elementary, midmanagement and superintendent certifications from the Texas Education Agency.
Among awards and honors, Sherman received the Outstanding Distance Learning Faculty Award from the Northeast Texas Consortium of Colleges and Universities in 2011 as well as the 2008 – 09 UT Tyler White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.
His professional and research interests include instructional leadership theory and principalship.
