The University of Texas at Tyler has advanced to the 2012 National Guard Forrest L. Wood College Fishing Regional Championship this fall, Jameson Adams, UT Tyler Bass Club adviser and assistant director of recreational facilities, announced.
UT Tyler senior Matthew McClellan of Tyler and May 2012 alumnus Charlie Brown of Jasper qualified by placing first at the Southern Conference Qualifying Tournament on Toledo Bend Lake in Sabine Parish, La. They beat teams from Lamar University, Louisiana State University – Shreveport and Angelo State University, among others.
The duo received a cash award in the amount of $5,000.
This year’s regional championship will be Oct. 4 – 6, 2012 on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Ark. The first-place team will win a Ranger 177TR bass boat valued at $25,000. The top five teams of each regional conference championship will advance to the national championship.
This will be UT Tyler’s third consecutive appearance at regionals.
The UT Tyler Bass Club began in fall 2009 as both a student organization and recreational club sport.
Named after Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, FLW Outdoors is the largest fishing tournament organization in the world and provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel allowances. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university.
National Guard FLW College Fishing is a nationwide competitive bass-fishing program open to all full-time students at four-year colleges and universities. It consists of 20 qualifying events, five regional championships and the national championship.
