The University of Texas at Tyler will offer a new master of accountancy program this fall, Dr. Donna Dickerson, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced.
The 30-credit hour program will provide students with the requisite accounting skills and knowledge for a professional career in accounting. It is designed to be flexible enough that a graduate may pursue a career in either the corporate or public sector while meeting state requirements to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination.
“We are extremely excited about the addition to our college and the strength it will bring to our accounting programs,” said Dr. Harold Doty, UT Tyler College of Business and Technology dean.
The UT Tyler master of accountancy program, the 14th of its kind in Texas, will phase out the university’s joint bachelor of business administration-master’s of business administration program and accounting certificate program, either of which students could pursue in an effort to obtain the credit hour requirement for the CPA exam. The BBA-MBA and accounting certificate programs will no longer accept students, Doty said.
“The program is proof that we are listening to industry and East Texas needs,” said Dr. Roger Lirely, UT Tyler Department of Accounting, Finance and Business Law chair. “We know the industry wants strong accounting students prepared to begin work immediately and the College of Business and Technology wants to provide that.”
Fall 2012 admission is limited and available to students who have or will complete the master of accountancy core within the next semester. Students who have not completed the core or are just beginning are encouraged to apply for fall 2013 admission. Beginning fall 2013, the full range of courses will be offered.
