Connecting You to Service Opportunities

The University of Texas at Tyler Office of Leadership and Service connects UT Tyler students to service opportunities on campus, in the Tyler/East Texas community and beyond. The Office of Leadership and Service provides programming and resources to prepare students to become socially responsible citizens. We take pride in the work our students do by serving our campus and local community.

The Office of Leadership and Service previous projects include:

  • Collaboration with the SPCA of East Texas
  • Thanksgiving Donation Drives
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Joint projects with the Hand Up Network and The East Texas Food Bank
  • MLK Day service projects

East Texas Big Event

One of our most impactful events is the East Texas (ETX) Big Event! This event is an East Texas wide day of service that strives to make a difference in the local community. Check back for information about the spring 2025 ETX Big Event.

This year's East Texas Big Event will be Saturday, February 22, 2024.

Service Hours

Service Hours Requirements

  • Service must be unpaid. This includes being paid by the organization itself for labor or completing service while being paid for a student-worker position or other employment.
  • Service cannot be directly related to responsibilities of being in the organization  (Ex: recruitment for new members, working a table at an organization fair, hosting a formal, holding a raffle). These are requirements of being in the organization itself and do not count as community service.
  • A contact must be listed in order for us to confirm the hours. If the hours cannot be confirmed, they will be denied. A contact internal to the organization will not be accepted as a confirmation.
  • Service cannot be internal to the organization (EX: cleaning a member's house, attending a formal, setting up internal events, attending meetings, tabling).
  • Students should submit the Engage service hours request within 72 hours.
  • Monetary donations cannot be counted as service hours.
  • A canned food drive or collecting, storing, and packing food/care items donations can be counted based on a detailed service hour log. This will be up to the discretion of the Assistant Director.
  • Service must support a nonprofit organization, cause, or institution.
