Curriculum

To earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing, you must complete 30 credit hours of upper-division courses. Gain a solid foundation in human diseases and prevention. Expand your health assessment techniques and develop evidence-based decision-making skills. Explore issues in contemporary nursing, community health and models of care. Embrace your leadership skills and acquire management tools for additional professional responsibilities.

The courses build on your academic and professional background. In the process, you strengthen your problem-solving techniques, critical thinking skills and written and oral communication abilities. Deepen your theoretical understanding and apply these concepts to practical applications to deliver more specialized care. According to Indeed, BSN-holding Registered Nurses can expect to earn about $16,000 more. This credential positions them for senior, managerial and more specialized roles and to pursue further education and certifications.

How to Apply

Admission Requirements

All registered nurses considering the RN-BSN track must have a current, active license in the state where they reside and practice in order to be eligible to complete the required curriculum. Applicants must meet Texas Core curriculum requirements and nursing prerequisites:

Texas Core Curriculum:

• Communication (e.g., English) — 6 credit hours
• Language, Philosophy and Culture — 3 credit hours
• Creative Arts — 3 credit hours
• Human Expression (e.g., Speech) — 3 credit hours
• U.S. History I and II — 6 credit hours
• U.S. Government — 3 credit hours
• Texas Government — 3 credit hours
• Math/Statistics I — 3 credit hours

Nursing Prerequisites

• Microbiology (lab required) — 4 credit hours
• Anatomy and Physiology I & II — 8 credit hours (labs required)
• Lifespan Growth and Development — 3 credit hours
• Introductory Psychology — 3 credit hours
• ADN Course Credits / Bridge Programs (EMT, Surg Tech, Resp Therapy, LVN)

If you were not required to take a chemistry class during your associate degree or diploma in nursing program, your requirement to complete the course is waived.

Application Instructions

All RN to BSN applicants must apply to the university and make sure to choose the RN-BSN program when prompted. Doing so routes your application to the RN-BSN nursing advisor. Following, you will receive your nursing admission letter.

At this point, go to the Undergraduate Admissions page to complete the Apply Texas application as a transfer student. Once you are accepted, you must follow the directions in the letter to confirm your admission at MyUTTyler.

If you are classified as an international student, please be aware that this track is offered completely online and therefore does not meet residency requirements for students who have F or J visas.

Deadlines

Applications are open year-round, with admission granted three times a year: fall, spring and summer. 

Tuition

Total tuition for in-state students is a flat rate of $9,895 for the entire 30-hour program, based on credit hour, and does not include the orientation fee, transfer student engagement fee or the cost of textbooks and other materials. Financial aid is also available.

Transfer Credits

The university bases the review and transfer of credits upon the RN competencies in alignment with competency-based education and the decision by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to honor the knowledge, skills and dispositions held by RNs. Associate degree registered nurses who earned their degree via an alternate pathway receive credit as established by the institution awarding the associate degree.

The RN student seeking to graduate with honors must take an additional 15 credit hours in order to meet the university requirement of completing 45 credit hours at UT Tyler (see graduation with honors requirements). If the RN applicant wishes to transfer a nursing course from another university equivalent to one at UT Tyler, they must notify the RN-BSN nursing advisor, who then considers and establishes course value and application.
