Dr. Steven Idell served as a pulmonary and critical care physician for over forty years, during which time he was honored to have served the medical needs of a large cohort of patients. He also served as Chair of the Department of Medical Specialties and Chair of Pulmonary Disease, during which time he helped to organize the clinical and medical educational efforts. He also served as Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, during which time he focused on the expansion of research broadly across the university.

  • Served as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physiology: Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology
  • Editorial Board member for the American Journal of Cellular and Molecular Physiology
  • Founder of Lung Therapeutics, now acquired by Aileron, renamed as Rein Therapeutics
  • Recipient of grants from The American Lung and Heart and other foundations
  • Inventor of a number of patents related to pleural therapeutics and an intervention for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • Temple Chair of Pulmonary Fibrosis for thirty years

 

Research Interests
Targeted therapy for pleural injury and pulmonary fibrosis, mechanisms of mediator-driven inflammation and determinants of cellular plasticity that contribute to these processes.

Education and Training

  • Medical school, Internal Medicine Internship, residency and pulmonary fellowship at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA 1973-83
  • PhD in Physiology (coagulation and acute lung injury) Temple University Hospital awarded 1987
  • Temple Chair in Pulmonary fibrosis, 1996-present, with numerous medical, post-doctoral, technical and student trainees educated in lung and pleural injury focused research laboratory that has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1986 to the present time
  • Dean of the Dean of the School of Medical Biological Sciences including the Biotechnology Master Degree Program, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, 2013-2021
  • Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, The University of Texas at Tyler, 2021-23
