Admission Requirements

Your journey to UT Tyler begins with the application process. No matter if you apply as a first-year undergraduate, transfer or graduate student, you must fulfill additional admission requirements if you are an international student. In order to apply, you must:

  • Complete an accredited high school program.
  • Meet the following requirements:
Top 25%* Automatic Admissions
2nd Quartile* Minimum of 2.75 GPA
3rd Quartile* Minimum of 2.75 GPA
4th Quartile* Minimum of 2.75 GPA

*If the school does not rank, you need a 2.75 GPA.

Follow these simple steps to complete your application:

  1. Fill out an International Undergraduate Freshman Application on ApplyTexas. Our application opens Aug. 1.
  2. Pay the $75 nonrefundable application fee.
  3. Send your official high school transcript:
    1. Transcripts from institutions outside of the United States must be translated (if applicable) and must have a course-by-course evaluation with a Grade Point Average (GPA). UT Tyler accepts original evaluations from the agencies listed below:

  4. Send Test Scores:
    1. Students must provide qualifying scores for one of the following English proficiency tests: 
    2. ACT or SAT
      • UT Tyler does not require ACT or SAT test scores for admission to the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years. We still encourage students to send available scores for class placement purposes.
    3. If a student has graduated from high school in the United States, UT Tyler waives the English Proficiency requirement.

 

You are considered a transfer student if you have 30 completed college hours and earned a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. If you have below 30 hours, apply as an international freshman.

  4. Provide proof of English proficiency.
All applicants must follow UT Tyler’s graduate admissions requirements and provide proof of English proficiency.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree from a foreign institution must submit results of an English proficiency examination. Evidence of English proficiency must be submitted before UT Tyler grants admission.

Accepted tests are the Test of English as a Foreign Language, the Pearson Test of English, the International English Language Testing System or the Duolingo English Test.

Minimum scores are as follows:

  • DET– 105
  • TOEFL – 79 (iBT) or 550 (pBT)
  • IELTS – 6.5 band score with 6.0 in each subsection
  • PTE Academic – 53
  • EIKEN – Grade 1

NOTE: Applicants to graduate psychology and counseling programs must have a minimum TOEFL score of 87, an IELTS score of 7.0 with 6.5 or greater in each subsection or a DET score of 115.

UT Tyler’s Educational Testing Service code for TOEFL is 6850. An institutional code is not required to submit your official IELTS scores. Please contact your IELTS testing center to request that your IELTS scores be electronically transmitted to UT Tyler. Please provide this exact information to your testing center:

Exemptions

There are some exemptions to our language proficiency requirement. Each exemption is outlined below:

  • Applicants who have completed a high school diploma, associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or professional degree from a U.S. academic institution are not required to submit English proficiency test scores. UT Tyler requires official transcripts for confirmation.
  • Students who have earned a grade of “B” or higher in ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 (or equivalent) from an accredited U.S. academic institution are not required to submit English proficiency test scores. UT Tyler requires official transcripts for confirmation.
  • Individuals who complete Level 6 of The University of Texas at Tyler's Intensive English Language Institute with no grade lower than “A” or who complete Level 7 with no grade lower than “B” may be eligible for a language proficiency waiver.
  • Naturalized U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants from one of the following countries or those who have earned a bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or professional degree from one of the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL or IELTS requirement. Official transcripts are required for confirmation. View exempt countries:

Form I-20
