Admission/Application Questions:
Prior to applying to the School of Performing Arts, all applicants must apply to UT Tyler. The ApplyTexas application opens for incoming first-year students on July 1 for the following academic year admission consideration.
No! You do not have to admitted to UT Tyler prior to applying to the School of Performing Arts. However, you must be admitted to UT Tyler to be considered for a music talent scholarship.
Yes, students can enter during the spring term. Students interested in a spring start will need to schedule an audition the fall.
Yes, anyone interested in pursuing a music major must pass an audition.
Yes, it is possible to double-major either within the School of Performing Arts and outside the school. However, it can be very difficult/time consuming. Students considering a double major are encouraged to speak with an advisor regarding their interests and further details.
Live auditions are strongly encouraged as the auditions consider applicants for both admission and music awards. Virtual auditions could be considered pending faculty approval, however, they are not typical or encouraged.
Applicants are notified by email of their School of Performing Arts admission decision one to two weeks after their audition.
Students interested in the music minor will still fill out the School of Performing Arts application, however, there is no audition requirement. Intead, students interested in a music minor will communicate their interest with the instructor of their instrument/voice and the faculty member will determine if the student is a candidate for the music minor.
Scholarship Questions
Everyone who applies and auditions for the School of Performing Arts as a music major is automatically considered for a music talent award based on the audition. There is no separate music scholarship application.
Information regarding general UT Tyler Scholarships can be found on the UT Tyler Financial Aid Website.
Yes. Any applicant who receives a competitive UT Tyler Scholarship (music or academic) of $1,000 or more also receives a scholarship waiver allowing them to pay the Texas tuition rates for the term of the scholarship. Please note these awards and the accompanying waiver are not given automatically to all students.
Talent awards are determined throughout the audition process. Notifications will be sent to students by early April.
Music talent awards are prioritized for music majors first, however, there are limited funds for music minors and non-majors.
