Dr. John James Cater III was honored as a Family Firm Institute Fellow with advanced certification in family business advising at the 2016 FFI Global Conference, Dr. James Lumpkin, The University of Texas at Tyler College of Business and Technology dean, announced.

Serving UT Tyler since 2012, Cater is an associate professor of management. He also directs the Center for Family and Small Enterprises.

FFI Fellow status signifies that Cater has completed an advanced program of study as part of the Family Firm Institute's Global Education Network, presented at FFI annual conferences, or published in FFI publications and has been a member of FFI for more than 10 years.

"Dr. Cater has done an outstanding job connecting the college to the business community through the Center for Family and Small Enterprises. This recognition is another example of how our faculty are building distinction at the national and international levels," Lumpkin said.

The Family Firm Institute Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising is designed to increase awareness and exposure to concepts, skills and knowledge necessary to optimize effectiveness as family business advisers and consultants. It is presented to individuals who have achieved comprehensive professional knowledge and gained significant expertise that can be used as value to family business owners and family wealth clients.

"The recognition by Dr. Cater's peers is once again an example of the level of commitment that Management and Marketing faculty demonstrate each and every day. The advanced certification obtained by Dr. Cater will benefit the small businesses community in Tyler for years to come," said Dr. Krist Swimberghe, UT Tyler management and marketing department chair.

FFI provides multidisciplinary educational programs to advance family enterprises worldwide by enabling collaboration between family enterprise practitioners and academics, creating a global network of professionals.
Participants have access to cutting edge information and resources for exploring the core disciplines – behavioral science, finance, law and management science – and steps for forming collaborative teams.

Cater teaches entrepreneurship, human resource management and international management courses at UT Tyler. His major research interests are in family business studies, small business, entrepreneurship, case studies and learning styles.

He holds a master of business administration from Wake Forest University as well as a Ph.D. in management from Louisiana State University.

The Family Firm Institute, an international professional membership organization of more than 1,800 individuals and organizations across 88 countries, is dedicated to providing interdisciplinary education and networking opportunities for family business and family wealth advisers, consultants, educators and researchers.

It works to increase public awareness and broaden the understanding of trends and developments in the family business and family wealth fields. For more information, visit ffi.org/.
