The University of Texas at Tyler has recorded a 2.7 percent increase in enrollment compared to last fall, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

Total headcount for this fall is 6,875 over fall 2011 figure of 6,696.

This fall, the university experienced increases in new freshmen, transfers and graduate students.

“We’re extremely pleased with our recruitment and retention efforts this year which resulted in an increase in undergraduate and graduate enrollment over last year,” said President Mabry.

Undergraduate enrollment experienced increases in all areas.

Graduate enrollment experienced a nine percent increase in returning students.

The increase in undergraduate enrollment is attributed to community college relationships, regional recruitment and proactive procedures to support students.

“We had a 10 percent increase in new transfer students that was due to the added value of the UT Tyler Transfer Advising Center on the Tyler Junior College campus and the Mobile Go Center application drives,” said Candice Lindsey, assistant vice president for enrollment management and marketing.

“Our new regional recruitment efforts also played a part in the increase. We have full-time recruiters stationed in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas, so we’ve improved our service to that market,” she said.

UT Tyler enhanced its customer service by implementing a call system in which students were called with reminders regarding applications, financial aid, registration and payments due, she added.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of almost 7,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
