The University of Texas at Tyler has been named a 2012 Laureate by IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program for a training module website created to assist special needs shelter volunteers, Dr. Linda Klotz, College of Nursing and Health Sciences dean, announced.
The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.
UT Tyler’s “Just in Time Medical Special Needs Shelter Training” module encompasses knowledge needed by nursing faculty and students, physicians, medical and non-medical volunteers as they work together to set up emergency shelters and meet medical needs of displaced populations.
The university has been involved in the disaster sheltering efforts and provided volunteers during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike. After Gustav, nursing faculty and staff, with the assistance of the UT Tyler Office of Instructional Design, created the site. The Hospital Preparedness Program Regional Advisory Council in Tyler provided funding.
“We are committed to meeting the university’s mission of making educational advancement possible for everyone. Technology is a key tool for making that accessibility happen. This award provides recognition of the commitment of the faculty to ensuring excellence in online education,” Klotz said.
