Better health outcomes for the communities of East Texas start here with clinical researchers developing new therapies for some of our toughest health challenges and comprehensive outreach providing affordable care and life-giving information to underserved populations. They also start with innovative programs that train passionate, motivated professionals to serve in every area of healthcare, from administration to the frontlines.

Our comprehensive and multifaceted approach encompasses four renowned health-centered schools and colleges offering bachelor’s to doctoral degrees, groundbreaking research centers and institutes, and the first medical school in East Texas, plus a partnership with UT Health East Texas and its 10-hospital, 90-clinic health system.

Degree Programs

The University of Texas at Tyler has continued to expand its academic offerings to fulfill the health needs of the East Texas region. UT Tyler’s degree and professional programs extend across the Fisch College of Pharmacy, the School of Health Professions, the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.

Graduate Medical Education

The University of Texas at Tyler launched its first medical residency in 1985 with the Family Medicine Residency program. Since then, UT Tyler has added the following programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education: Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine, Rural Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Rural Psychiatry, General Preventative Medicine, General Surgery, Transitional Year and Anesthesiology, in addition to several internship and fellowship opportunities.

UT Tyler Health Science Center

In 1977, the East Texas Chest Hospital joined the University of Texas System, becoming The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler. After merging with UT Tyler in 2021, it became The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center. The merger advanced community partnerships, expanded the health-focused programs available and enhanced research opportunities for students.

UT Health East Texas

In 2018, the UT Health East Texas hospital system formed through a partnership between Ardent Health Services and The University of Texas System. The 10-hospital health system serves as the university medical center for the region.

The First Medical School in East Texas

In 2020, the university reached another groundbreaking achievement. The Board of Regents unanimously approved the formation of what would become the UT Tyler School of Medicine, creating the first medical school in East Texas. With support from the East Texas Medical Center Foundation’s $80-million donation, UT System Board of Regents and numerous other supporters, UT Tyler welcomed the School of Medicine’s first class in 2023.

Schools and Colleges

UT Tyler is home to a wide variety of undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs, as well as fellowships and internships. Our four highly regarded schools and colleges attract renowned faculty and scholars, as well as driven students seeking to impact their community.

Fisch College of Pharmacy

Train for a pharmacy career through UT Tyler’s doctoral-level program. The student-centered format emphasizes collaboration, experiential education and problem-solving.

School of Health Professions

Prepare for a career in public health, kinesiology, rehabilitation science or health administration under the guidance of world-class faculty with our rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs.

School of Medicine

Focus on the unique healthcare needs of East Texas in the region’s first medical school. In addition to a Doctor of Medicine, we offer a master’s in biotechnology, certificate programs, 11 medical residencies, and eight fellowship and internship programs.

School of Nursing

Join our nationally ranked nursing programs, whether you are just entering the profession or have years of experience. We offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, plus certificates, in in-person and online formats.

Research

At UT Tyler, we aim to improve the health of East Texas and beyond through discovery and innovation. Whether it is a faculty member leading a team through a medical breakthrough, a patient participating in a clinical trial, or an undergraduate student proposing an original project, research lies at the heart of our educational goals.

The University of Texas at Tyler holds the highest Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in East Texas. We are an R2 research institution, indicating a high level of research activity.

Focus Areas

UT Tyler conducts clinical and biomedical research involving some of East Texas’s most pressing health issues. Our robust list of research centers and institutes focuses on the following areas: cardiology, immunology, microbiology, neurology, occupational injuries and diseases, oncology, orthopedics and sports medicine, public health, pulmonary medicine and trauma.

Funding

The University of Texas at Tyler has successfully secured millions of dollars in research funding from the National Institutes of Health; the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and other public and private organizations.

Outreach and Community Programs

We partner with community organizations and other stakeholders to implement outreach initiatives that center around the needs of East Texas. These include professional training and community education, substance abuse research and services, community services, behavioral health and trauma care for children and adolescents, and other programs.
