Armetta LaShun Roy, a UT Tyler graduate with a B.A. in English and a Political Science minor, received the 2022 Iconic Woman of East Texas award.  As a native of Troup, TX, this small town girl continually proves that you don’t have to be from a big town to accomplish big things! 

With achievements in political campaigns, she currently serves as the Director of Engagement on the Kaplan for Mayor campaign in Houston. Inspired by the New Leadership Program at UT Austin, she founded W.I.S.E (We’re In Search of Equality) to promote gender rights and challenge biases. Leading the program twice, she expanded her leadership roles in organizations like the Texas Democratic Party, VoteRunLead, and MOVE Texas. LaShun advocates for civic engagement in rural communities, organizing rallies and voter registration efforts.
