CAMPUS THREAT UPDATE – 9:52 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2013
On Thursday afternoon (Oct. 17, 2013), The University of Texas at Tyler received at least five telephone calls over a four-hour period from an unknown caller claiming to have information about an unspecified act of violence that would take place on the campus Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.
Through an investigation spanning 36 hours, police were able to identify the source of the calls. The investigation revealed that the caller had a personal motive, unrelated to the university, to have weekend activities cancelled.
Planned extra security measures and personnel remained in place throughout the weekend to ensure the safety of the students, staff and visitors to the university. Weekend activities went on as scheduled, and the campus was well-protected at all times.
UT Tyler received a tremendous amount of support from The University of Texas System Police, the City of Tyler Police Department and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
The UT Tyler Police Department will be pursuing criminal charges against the person who called in the threats to the university. Due to this being an ongoing investigation, no other details will be released at this time.

CAMPUS THREAT UPDATE – 2:35 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2013
University Police, with assistance from other agencies, are continuing the investigation into the calls received yesterday. The calls seemed to indicate the possibility of armed violence toward an unnamed individual or individuals.
Increased security from additional police officers is in place and will remain in place throughout the weekend or until this situation has been resolved. Cooperating police departments include UT Tyler, UT Health Northeast, UT System and City of Tyler.
Police are seeking assistance in determining the whereabouts of the individual pictured. Police believe this person may have information that would be valuable to this investigation.
Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 903.566.7300.
The campus community should remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to University Police at extension 903.566.7300 or by calling 911.

On Thursday (Oct. 17) afternoon, UT Tyler received phone calls that suggested a possible threat to campus. At this time we have nothing to substantiate an imminent threat to campus.
We are asking everyone to be aware of your surroundings. The calls seemed to suggest a possible threat involving a narrow time frame that appears to end this weekend.
Campus police are increasing security at all campus events.
If you receive any suspicious phone calls, notice any suspicious activity or have any information regarding suspicious activity, please notify university police immediately by calling 911 or 903.566.7300.
