UT Tyler Magazine, Spring 2012

President's Letter

In this issue, you'll gain a deeper understanding of just what makes The University of Texas at Tyler unique and why our students are so successful.

One of our forward-thinking faculty members, Dr. Gus Gordon, associate professor of accounting, is taking an innovative approach to help his students master the theories of management. Dr. Gordon has created a virtual manufacturing environment using video feeds to illustrate concepts taught in graduate management coursework. The project will immerse students in the factory's operations, increase the relevance of classroom concepts and personalize the experience by introducing factory staff.

"Our Model UN program is representing the UT Tyler brand around the world. The program earned top honors – Outstanding Delegation – at the 2012 National Model United Nations-Europe Conference in Lille, France. This is the highest honor presented by the conference and is awarded to only the top five delegations from around the world. It is based on teamwork, leadership, speaking and negotiation abilities, knowledge of issues and proper use of procedure rules."

Funded by a grant from the Graduate Management Admission Council (the group that produces the GMAT exam), UT Tyler is one of 12 entities worldwide to earn the grant based on Dr. Gordon's proposal, "Enhancing Relevance in the Graduate Business Curriculum through Factory Videos."

On another note, our Model UN program is representing the UT Tyler brand around the world. The program earned top honors – Outstanding Delegation – at the 2012 National Model United Nations-Europe Conference in Lille, France. This is the highest honor presented by the conference and is awarded to only the top five delegations from around the world. It is based on teamwork, leadership, speaking and negotiation abilities, knowledge of issues and proper use of procedure rules.

You will be intrigued to read about Valari Dobson Staab, one of our distinguished alums who was recently recognized by the university for her professional achievements. Valari is the president of NBC Owned Television Stations, overseeing the company's local stations in 10 cities across the United States. She holds a bachelor of business administration degree from UT Tyler and began her career at a local television station.

This magazine also features the generous and supportive Riter family. Whit and Cynthia Riter and Tom and Melinda Riter Shoemake are continuing the legacy of giving established by their parents, the late A.W. "Dub" Riter Jr. and his wife B.J.

I hope you'll enjoy these superb examples of the quality and excellence that make up the UT Tyler advantage.
