Graduate International Student Admissions

Proof of English Proficiency

All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English language proficiency. Applicants may submit official results of either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Pearson Test of English Proficiency (PTE). 

Minimum Requirements: A minimum score of 79 on the iBT TOEFL; or, minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 overall band score and 6.0 in each subsection; PTE of 53 or, proof of bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the US. *NOTE: Psychology applicants must have a minimum TOEFL of 87 or IELTS of 7.0 with 6.5 or greater in each subsection.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The minimum TOEFL iBT score required is 79. Applicants with lower TOEFL scores will not be considered for admission.

TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service.  The ETS institutional code for UT Tyler is 6850. Additional detailed information can be found at www.toefl.org . Copies of the TOEFL Bulletin are also available at US educational commissions and foundations, bi-national centers, and private organizations such as the Institute of International Education (IIE).

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The minimum IELTS scores required are 6.5 in the overall band and 6.0 in each subsection. Applicants with lower IELTS scores will not be considered for admission.

English Proficiency Test Requirement Exemptions

Applicants who have completed bachelor’s or master’s degrees from a regionally accredited US academic institution are not required to submit an English proficiency test score; instead, they will submit an official transcript from the institution from which they earned their degrees.

Students who have completed the equivalent of ENG1301 and ENG1302 from a regionally accredited US academic institution and received a minimum grade of B are not required to submit an English proficiency test score; instead, they will submit an official transcript from the institution at which they completed the equivalent courses.

Applicants from the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL or IELTS requirement:

  • American Somoa
  • Australia
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Canada (except Quebec)
  • Dominica
  • Grand Cayman
  • Grenada
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • Liberia
  • New Zealand
