Construction managers plan, coordinate, schedule, budget and supervise subcontractors/trades from project beginning to completion. Construction managers monitor and control the daily activity on a job site and make decisions about construction activities. The main goal of construction managers is to meet clients' requirements and deadlines by producing a functional and financially viable project.

The construction industry has five main sectors:

  • Heavy/Civil
  • Industrial
  • Environmental

The primary responsibilities construction managers control daily are maintaining the budget, monitoring and updating the schedule to meet deadlines, maintaining a quality product through enforcing building codes and architectural specifications, managing use of equipment and materials and keeping a safe work environment.

Marketable Skills

Students exit from any degree program with a variety of skills. Marketable skills are those valued by employers that can be applied in a variety of work settings, including interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skill areas. These skills can be either primary or complementary to a major and are acquired by students through education, including curricular, co-curricular, and other non-classroom activities (Texas High Education Coordinating Board, 2015).
