Kouider Mokhtari had his book published, Research-based instruction that makes a difference in English learners' success. Mokhtari also published the journal article, Examining the relative contributions of content knowledge and strategic processing to reading comprehension in Literacy Research: Theory, Method and Practice Yearbook.

Joanna Neel and Kouider Mokhtari along with colleagues published the journal article, Assessing the promise of a supplemental reading intervention program for at-risk first grade students in a public school setting in the International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education.

Wes Hickey and Ross Sherman had their manuscript Readiness for active student engagement: Principals' perceptions related to the challenges of hands-on activities in a district of Belize published in the November 2013 issue of Caribbean Teaching Scholar.

Kathleen Everling recently had her article "Professional development and self-efficacy of Texas educators and the teaching of English language learners" published in the International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Jessi Rueter had her chapter "The assessment of executive functioning using the Delis rating of executive functions (D-REF)" published in The Handbook of Executive Functioning.

Colleen Swain and Julie Delello have been selected to be among the inaugural team of UT Tyler Faculty Fellows. This is a distinguished community of scholars dedicated to teaching excellence, innovation, student success, and scholarship.

Mokhtari and Ms. Carla Reichard developed the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) in 2002. The MARSI is now being included in Vanderbilt University's IRIS Center, a national center dedicated to improving education outcomes for children. IRIS Center materials are used throughout the nation and world. In addition, the MARSI has been translated in nearly 15 languages and is being used in various schools and universities in the US and around the globe. With the inclusion of the MARSI in an IRIS Center module, the dissemination of this important instruction will only increase! Congratulations to Dr. Mokhtari and Ms. Reichard!

Karl Witt was one of six University of Texas at Tyler faculty members awarded an Outstanding Faculty Award by the Alpha Chi Honor Society on Nov. 18th.

Frank Dykes was elected to the Association Chair of the Small Special Education Programs Caucus (SSEPC) for the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Genie Linn is the Principal Investigator of the $10,000 grant from the Fair Foundation to study integrity among high school students. Karl Witt, Howard Patterson, and Keith McCoy are also researchers in this study.

Olga Fisher, Professor of Education, received an award recognizing her for 18 years of service to the Academic Rodeo writing contest.

Ross Sherman, Dean of the College of Education and Psychology, won the Texas Council of Educator's of Professional Administration's 2013 Educator of the Year award. Congratulations, Dean Sherman!

Becky Rutledge, superintendent program student and teacher leader at the Innovation Academy charter school, published Innovative Classrooms: One School's Way of Piecing the Puzzle Together in the September issue of Instructional Leader.

Frank Dykes was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and awarded tenure by the University of Texas System Board of Regents. We congratulate Dr. Dykes on reaching this important career milestone and for having his work in teaching, research, and service validated and acknowledged by his peers, external reviewers, and the UT System Board of Regents. Congratulations Dr. Frank Dykes!

Kouider Mokhtari, Anderson-Vukelja-Wright Endowed Chair delivered a keynote address at the 35th Annual Sanibel Leadership Conference in Clearwater Beach Florida (June 19-21, 2013). The Annual Sanibel conference, known as Florida's voice for Higher Education, examines research, policy, and practice related to the education of all students, with particular focus on the education of English learners in mainstream classrooms.

Wes Hickey had an article entitled, "Intelligent Design in the Public School Science Classroom", published in Interchange: A quarterly review of education.

Paula Lundberg-Love has just had two chapters published in Violence and Abuse in Society: Understanding a Global Crisis. Co-authored with Amy E. Werry, the first chapter is entitled "From Powerlessness to Resilience: Therapeutic Interventions with Adult Survivors of Incest." The second chapter, co-authored with Jennifer Piazza and Melodye Cure is entitled "Long-term health Effects Associated with Childhood Sexual Abuse."

Ross Sherman, professor and educational leadership and policy studies chair, was the university's 2011 "Outstanding Distance Learning Faculty Award" recipient. Dr. Sherman was recognized at the at the sixth annual Northeast Texas Consortium of Colleges and Universities Distance Learning Conference for leading the department into developing an online format of the principal and superintendent certification programs, increasing enrollment in both by 250 percent.

Sarah Sass, assistant professor of psychology at The University of Texas at Tyler, has received a grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to study a new approach to treating anxiety.

Francisco Flores, an education student, has been recognized for his outstanding work in the classroom by being selected for the 2011 Warren Fellowship for Future Teachers.

Sarah Sass, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Counseling, received a SPR Student Poster Award for her poster titled “Time course of attentional bias distinguishes anxiety, depression, and their comorbidity” at the 2010 meeting of Society for Psychophysiological Research in Portland, OR.

West Side and Fred Douglass elementary school in the Jacksonville Independent School District were the only schools in East Texas recognized as 2010 Blue Ribbon schools. The principals of the two schools, Sandi Jones and Amber Penn, are alumnae of UT Tyler’s graduate program in Educational Leadership.
