Service learning combines conventional academic instruction with participation in direct, meaningful community service. Service learning elevates in-class study and furthers educational goals while promoting a sense of civic responsibility and community commitment. From focused instruction and concept discussions with classmates to practical, real-world application and after-the-fact reflection and assessment, the learning process becomes a much richer and more well-rounded experience.
The Office of Leadership & Service in collaboration with the Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation provides resources to support successful service-learning implementation. Resources offered supply steps for implementation, programs for faculty to collaborate with other faculty, connections to community partners, and documentation of faculty experiences for reporting.
